On November 19th, HumanitiesDC honored Marjan and Andy Shallal with the Distinguished Service to the Humanities Award at a kickoff event celebrating HumanitiesDC’s 40th anniversary in 2020. Nearly 100 people joined in the fun and mingled with local dignitaries, current and past Board members, supporters, and grantees such as Communicating Across Cultures, the Dance Journalism Project, Asian American Voices in the Making of Washington, D.C.’s Cultural Landscape, Mapping Segregation in DC and the Rainbow History Project.
The Shallals are the owners of Busboys and Poets, a chain of restaurants that also create a space for art, culture and politics to intentionally collide. They have spent their professional and personal careers educating people through meaningful engagement and creating places of gathering that are inclusive of all and representative of the communities and people in which they are located. Longtime supporters of HumanitiesDC, the Shallals have bridged disagreements by connecting individuals and organizations through their philanthropic efforts and political activism.
